Proximity - Otis' stunning debut CD
It
seems a long time since Otis first took to the stage or to be
exact, since Simon Burges and Dave Patrick crunched that first
humble cookie and set about realising their musical partnership.
The songs from this album started life in many places, London,
Berlin, Devon, Kent and Hatfield - in fact wherever a guitar,
piano, pen and paper were closer than a visit to the pub. Some
of the songs here were written as far back as 1991, but on that
day in 1994 as the Otis touchpaper was lit, it wasn’t apparent
what was going to happen, just that a unique partnership of two
musical kindreds had got underway.
What’s transpired since has been a labour of love, hard going
at times yes; with plenty of musical detours on the way. Select
live performances and suppport slots with bands including
Wishbone
Ash, have ensured Otis’ following from a much devoted, yet
oft-disappointed faithful (the lack of recorded output and
consistent promise of “an album just around the corner” has seen
to that). However, if you’re holding this CD, chances are you
are one of the few who - no matter how - have found Otis. If you
have been waiting for this, be disappointed no longer.
It’s hard to describe this album, save to say there’s a
warmth and realism captured here that has taken nearly seven
years to create. Perhaps it’s best to just let the music talk
for itself. The playing and songwriting will leave you glad to
have discovered Proximity, but moreover give you the chance to
finally reflect on Otis for what they were good at - writing
songs.
